Jeff Nathanson, a writer for movies like Catch Me If You Can and The Lion King, wanted a good movie for his daughters. He couldn’t find one, so he decided to make one himself.

He found a book called Young Woman and the Sea by Glenn Stout in a used bookstore. The book is about Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Jeff took the book to his friend, movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who worked on movies like Pirates of the Caribbean. Together, they started making the movie with director Joachim Rønning. That was nine years ago.

Now, the movie, also called Young Woman and the Sea, is finally ready. It’s coming to theaters this weekend, made by Walt Disney Pictures. It tested very well with audiences, the best in Bruckheimer’s career. He said, “You feel it in the audience. They laughed, clapped, and even cried. I knew we had something special.”

The movie stars Daisy Ridley, known from Star Wars, as Trudy. It tells the story of Trudy’s life. She recovered from a serious illness called measles, learned to swim when it was unusual for women to swim, went to the Olympics, and then decided to swim across the English Channel.

Bruckheimer often tests his movies with audiences to see what they like. For example, in Armageddon, women wanted Ben Affleck’s character to give his girlfriend a ring, so they added that scene. In Dangerous Minds, people didn’t like the romantic part, so they removed it.

Young Woman and the Sea tested very well. Bruckheimer said it was extraordinary because it resonated with both men and women. He said, “Trudy’s story is amazing. She broke barriers and showed women are as strong as men. She swam 35 miles in freezing water and beat the men’s record by two hours. It’s unbelievable what she did.”
