“Netflix Set to Premiere ‘Butterfly in the Sky’ Documentary: Celebrating Reading Rainbow”

Netflix is getting ready to add a new movie to its collection! It’s called Butterfly in the Sky. The movie was first shown in special theaters in March and April 2024.

Now, imagine stepping back in time to the 1980s. Butterfly in the Sky brings us to that magical era to explore the incredible story of a beloved TV show called Reading Rainbow. 

This show wasn’t just any show; it was made especially for kids, to make reading fun and exciting for them. Lasting a remarkable 26 seasons and spanning 155 episodes, Reading Rainbow became a cherished part of many childhoods, airing from 1983 until 2006.

But how did it all begin? That’s exactly what Butterfly in the Sky reveals. Initially unveiled at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in 2023, this documentary takes us behind the scenes to uncover the challenges and triumphs faced in bringing Reading Rainbow to life. 

 

Through a blend of heartfelt interviews and rare archival footage, viewers see why this show left such a lasting impact on so many lives.

The talented duo of Bradford Thomason and Brett Whitcomb took the helm as directors of this captivating documentary. And guess who else appears in the film? None other than the iconic LeVar Burton himself, the beloved host of Reading Rainbow. 

Joining him are a host of other familiar faces, including Whoopi Goldberg, Alisa Reyes, Kenny Black, and Dean Parisot, each sharing their insights and memories of the show.

Following its successful debut at the film festival, Butterfly in the Sky embarked on a theatrical journey across the United States. Starting from March 17th, eager audiences could catch it on the big screen at AMC Theaters. Then, in late April, it became available for viewing at home through various video-on-demand platforms.

But here’s the exciting news: soon, Butterfly in the Sky will flutter its way onto Netflix! Starting May 24th, 2024, viewers in the United States will have the opportunity to stream this heartwarming documentary from the comfort of their own homes. We already have an published a full list of all the other movies, shows and documentaries lined up for May 2024. 

While it’s currently exclusive to Netflix in the US, there’s hope that it may eventually spread its wings to other Netflix regions around the world.

This isn’t the first time Netflix has teamed up with Sidestilt Films. Remember The Pez Outlaw from January 2023? Yup, that was another Sidestilt production that found a home on Netflix.
