In February 2023, Channing Tatum announced that he is working on a remake of the iconic film “Ghost,” which originally starred Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, and the late Patrick Swayze. While Tatum has yet to contact Moore about the project, the actress has expressed her curiosity and anticipation for the upcoming remake.
Moore, 61, shared her thoughts during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly while promoting her latest horror movie, “The Substance,” at the Cannes Film Festival.
Despite not having heard directly from Tatum, she spoke highly of his talents and expressed interest in his interpretation of the classic film.
“He’s super talented,” Moore commented. “I’d be curious to see what he decides to do.”
A representative for Tatum did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Moore’s remarks.
The original “Ghost,” released almost 35 years ago, was a monumental success. The film grossed over $500 million worldwide and earned five Academy Award nominations, winning two Oscars for Best Supporting Actress (Whoopi Goldberg) and Best Screenplay — Written Directly for the Screen.
Reflecting on the potential for the remake, Moore noted that while many stories have been told before, there is always room for new interpretations. “Every story in some ways has already been told. The wonderful thing is the different way things can be reinterpreted,” she said.
Moore also acknowledged the balance between preserving the integrity of beloved films and embracing new versions. “I think there are some films that often are better left not touched and then sometimes there are wonderful surprises in that reinterpretation.”
Tatum, known for his roles in “Magic Mike” and “21 Jump Street,” revealed in a Vanity Fair interview that his production company, Free Association, has secured the rights to “Ghost.” He hinted at significant changes in the new version, suggesting that the remake would not be a straightforward retelling.
“We’re going to do something different,” Tatum said in an Interview with Vanity Fair. “I think it needs to change a little bit.”
The original “Ghost,” directed by Jerry Zucker, follows the story of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze), who is murdered and returns as a ghost to save his girlfriend Molly Jensen (Demi Moore) from impending danger. The film also famously boosted the popularity of the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody.”
As fans of the original “Ghost” await further details on the remake, Moore’s endorsement and curiosity add an intriguing layer to the anticipation surrounding Tatum’s project.
